Exhausting loan process with disappointing results
Reviewed on May 14, 2015
Overall Feedback:
Oportun is attempting to open its loan market to the English-speaking audience in the United States, but these loan applicants should find one of their competitors instead [OneMain Financial or Springleaf Financial] for loans in the 30%-50% APR range. Opportun's promotional posters say applicants only need a government-issued photo ID, proof of address and proof of income, but after they spend 30 minutes with you on the phone asking more than the usual number of questions and repeating their prepared spiels, they also need four references that they will call before they approve your loan. That added more than a week to the loan process, particularly because very few of their employees are bilingual [if your friends speak only English]. After waiting more than two weeks and making numerous phone calls to check whether they had reached my references, they approved me for only $500 [although all of my other payments are on time]. When I said I wanted to think about that offer, they pulled the offer altogether. Oportun had the most exhausting process of any loan company I have ever dealt with for the least satisfying result with the least accommodating customer service. Loan applicants may want to look elsewhere for additional funds.
